Advent Gifts and Countdown Ideas for a Christian Home in Canada

Christmas gift guide cover: Advent Gifts and Countdown Ideas for a Christian Home in Canada.

A father stands in the hallway on the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent, holding a cardboard box of Christmas decorations. His daughter is eight. She asks if they're doing the calendar with the chocolate again.

He says yes, and then wonders why he said it so fast.

Short answer: the best Advent gifts for a Christian home are small things the family uses every day for four weeks, and the best countdowns cost almost nothing. Ours start at $25.

Advent begins on Sunday, 29 November this year, and it runs four Sundays to Christmas. It's the season of waiting, and the trouble with waiting in December is that everything else is already unwrapped. The shops put the tinsel up in October. The house gets loud. A Christian home that wants the quiet part of the story has to make some room for it on purpose.

That's what these eight ideas are for. The first three are gifts you can order from us, priced in Canadian dollars and checked on 24 Oct. The rest are countdown ideas you can start tonight with what's already in the drawer.

Three gifts for the home

  1. Names of Christ Mug, $25 for the 11 oz size, $35 for the 15 oz. The names from Isaiah 9:6 are stacked around the mug in graded type, so there's something to read over the first coffee of the morning. You can add a name at the base to make it one person's mug. Best for: a parent, grandparent or small-group leader who wants a quiet Advent habit. Not for: a child under about six, or a home that already has more mugs than shelf.

  2. The Word Became Flesh Print, from $25 for 8x10 in, $29 for 11x14 in and $39 for 16x20 in. It's John 1:14 on a calm print, for people who like the Gospel of John's Christmas better than the stable scene. Choose KJV or WEB, and hang it on the first Sunday of Advent. Frame not included. Best for: the kitchen or the front hall. Not for: anyone who wants a picture of the nativity.

  3. John 3:16 Christmas Art Print, from $25 for 8x10 in, $29 for 11x14 in and $35 for 16x20 in. It's the whole reason for Christmas in one sentence, with a family name beneath it if you like. You see exactly how it will print before you pay. Best for: a family that wants one verse everyone can say by heart. Not for: a wall that's already full.

Five countdown ideas that cost almost nothing

  1. A paper chain with a verse on each link. Twenty-four strips of paper, a stapler, and a verse from Isaiah to Luke on each one. A child tears off one link each evening and reads it out. Cost: paper and tape. Best for: families with children from about five. Not for: the family that has to get it perfect on the first night.

  2. Luke 1 and 2, a few verses a night. Read the story in the order Luke tells it, from the angel in the temple to the shepherds. It takes under five minutes. Use the Bible already on the shelf. Best for: any home. Not for: a household where nobody can sit still until the dishes are done, so do the dishes first.

  3. An Advent wreath with four ordinary candles. Light one the first Sunday, two the second, and so on. Grocery store candles do the job. Say a short prayer while the match is still going. Best for: a table everyone gathers at. Not for: a house with a cat that loves candles.

  4. One small act of kindness each day. A card for a neighbour, soup for the woman down the road, a coat to the church coat drive. Write them on slips and draw one from a bowl each morning. Best for: a family with older children who've outgrown the chocolate. Not for: a week when someone's sick, and that's all right.

  5. A nativity the children are allowed to touch. Put the figures out at the start of Advent and let the shepherds travel across the house. Move the wise men a little each week and keep the baby in the drawer until Christmas Eve. Best for: children under ten. Not for: an heirloom set that has to stay on the high shelf.

The verse behind the waiting

Isaiah wrote to people who'd been living in bad days for a long time, and he told them the days wouldn't last.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. (Isaiah 9:2, KJV)

Advent is the weeks where a family sits in that dark with a candle and says the light is coming. A gift can help with that. It doesn't have to be loud.

If your church wants every household to have one

A pastor or a small-group leader can order any of the mugs and prints above for a whole congregation. Our church page takes orders from 10 to 200 pieces, sends you a quote and a proof within one business day, and ships one box to one address. The price per piece comes down as the quantity goes up, and the exact number is in the quote. Check the order-by dates on that page before you plan an Advent handout, since printed gifts take a few days to make.

How we chose

Every gift in this guide is one we sell, so nothing here earns us an affiliate commission, and we haven't linked to anyone else's shop. The free ideas are ones we'd happily do ourselves. Prices were checked on 24 Oct and are in Canadian dollars. Our shop ships across Canada with no duties. You can read how we pick things on our disclosure page.
