Christian Housewarming Gifts for a New Home, With a Verse and a Family Name

A couple sits on the floor of an empty living room on the day they get the keys, eating takeout out of the box because the kitchen table is still in a truck somewhere. Someone has left a bottle of wine on the counter. They are grateful, and they already own wine.
Short answer: a good Christian housewarming gift is something the household uses in the first week and keeps in sight for years, such as a mug or a print with the family name and a verse about a house. Ours start at $25.
The trouble with housewarming gifts is that new homeowners have plenty of candles and no idea where to put them. The gift that lasts is usually the one that does a small job. A mug for the first morning. A print for the bare wall by the front door. A set of coasters before the first guests arrive.
This guide has five of ours, priced in Canadian dollars and checked on 30 Oct, and four ideas that cost little. Every Scripture quote is taken from the text on the product or from the King James Version.

Wisdom Builds a House Mug, $25 for 11 oz, $35 for 15 oz. Proverbs 24:3-4 with the household name at the base. Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. (Proverbs 24:3-4, KJV) You can choose KJV or WEB. Best for: a neighbour, a co-worker or a couple in their first place. Not for: a household that would rather have no text on a mug.
Family Name Household Verse Print, from $25 for 8x10 in, $29 for 11x14 in and $39 for 16x20 in. The family name, the year established and Joshua 24:15. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15, KJV) Hang it by the front door or in the kitchen. Frame not included. Best for: a family that wants one sentence on the wall that speaks for everyone. Not for: a wall that is already full.
Closing Gift Mug Pair, $45 for a pair of 11 oz, $59 for a pair of 15 oz. Two matching mugs with the street address, the family name and the year they moved in. Joshua 24:15 can be added, and you can leave the verse off. Best for: a couple, or a client who has already received enough wine and candles. Not for: someone who does not want their address printed on anything.
The Ten Commandments, Slate Tablets, $58. Two natural slate tablets, each 6 by 8.8 inches, with the Ten Commandments from Exodus 20 laser-engraved. The tablets sit on black metal easel stands. Choose WEB or KJV, Protestant or Catholic and Lutheran numbering, and add up to two lines of dedication on the right tablet, such as a name and a year. Best for: a home where the commandments are taught. Not for: a casual gift, since it is a serious object.
O Holy Night Nativity Slate Coasters, Set of 4, $48. Four round slate coasters, each 4 inches across, engraved with a nativity scene and the words "O Holy Night". Small rubber feet protect the table. Best for: a move that lands near Christmas. Not for: a gift you want to keep in use in July, since the scene is the nativity.
Four ideas that cost little
A meal on the first night. Nobody can find the pots. A hot dinner with the dishes in disposable tins is worth more than anything on a shelf.
A plant or a loaf of bread and a small bag of salt. Both are simple things a household can use on day one, and a line on the card is enough.
An hour with a drill. Offer to hang pictures, put up curtain rods or assemble a shelf. Name the day.
A short blessing, said or written. Read the Proverbs verse above aloud when you visit, or write it on a card. Ask first if the household would like to hear it.

When a church or an agent gives many
A church that welcomes new families, or a realtor who gives a gift at every closing, can order several of the same piece. Our church page takes orders from 10 to 200 pieces, and we send a quote and a proof before anyone pays. See more on our new home gifts page.

Questions people ask
- What is a good Christian housewarming gift? A small object that does a job, with a verse about a house on it: a mug for the first morning, a print by the front door, or a set of coasters.
- Which verse fits a new home? Joshua 24:15 ("as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord") and Proverbs 24:3-4, about a house built by wisdom, are the two most familiar. Both are on our products.
- Can the family name be added? Yes, on the print, the household mug and the mug pair. Check the preview before you pay. The slate tablets take a two-line dedication instead.
- How much should I spend? Our pieces run from $25 to $58. A meal on the first night costs less and is remembered just as long.
- Is a mug pair better than one mug? If two people are moving in, a pair means no one has to share. If you are thanking a household, one mug with the family name is enough.
