Cool Pastor Gifts for the Pastor Who Has Enough Mugs

For the pastor gift guide cover: Cool Pastor Gifts for the Pastor Who Has Enough Mugs.

Picture a pastor's study with a shelf along one wall. On the shelf, nine mugs, each with a verse, each from a different December.

Short answer: for a pastor who has enough mugs, give something that suits their tradition and their desk: a replica manuscript, an icon, a prayer journal or a quiet cross.

Nobody on that shelf did anything wrong. Every one of those mugs was a kindness. But a pastor who has been given nine of them will notice a tenth, and not in the way you hoped.

The trick with a pastor is to match the gift to what they actually do all week. They read, they pray, they write, they sit with people. A gift that helps with any of those will get used. Here are six, and every price was checked on 23 Oct.

Six cool pastor gifts

  1. P52 papyrus replica, the Gospel of John fragment, from ManuscriptLab, CA$88.08 (checked 23 Oct). A replica of one of the oldest known fragments of the Gospel of John, on genuine Egyptian papyrus, framed or unframed. A pastor or seminarian could set it on a desk. The shop is listed in Wales, and the listing ships to Canada. Best for: a pastor who loves how the New Testament got here. Not for: anyone expecting an original manuscript.

  2. Good Shepherd icon, gilded and sealed with beeswax, from MAJKworkshop, CA$104.41 (checked 23 Oct). The listing describes a Byzantine style icon of Jesus the Good Shepherd, ready to hang, in four sizes, and its title calls it a gift for a priest. The shop is listed in Poland and the listing ships to Canada. It's a fitting ordination or anniversary gift. Best for: a pastor or priest on an ordination or anniversary, from a church that appreciates icons. Not for: anyone expecting painted egg tempera; the listing says the image is applied by a workshop technique.

  3. Celtic cross embossed leather prayer journal, from MhareCA, CA$55 (checked 23 Oct). A leather journal, 7 by 5 inches, embossed with a Celtic cross framed by knotwork. The shop is listed in Toronto and it's new, with 3 sales shown, so a buyer takes a small risk on an unproven seller. Best for: a pastor who keeps a prayer journal. Not for: anyone who wants a long track record.

  4. Trust Desktop Cross with Bronze Title Bar, from Lighthouse Christian Products through Christianbook, US$17.98 (checked 23 Oct). A standing resin cross with a bronze-coloured bar reading Trust. A quiet desk piece, and a small step up from a mug. Christianbook's shipping chart lists Canada. Best for: a pastor, elder or church administrator. Not for: anyone wanting something personalized.

  5. Book of Common Prayer ceramic lightswitch cover, from Stirabout, CA$84.87 (checked 23 Oct). A ceramic cover with a prayer from the Book of Common Prayer, for a switch that gets touched a dozen times a day. The shop is listed in Washington state and the listing ships to Canada. Best for: an Anglican priest or a new rector. Not for: anyone without an Anglican or Episcopal connection.

  6. The Red Door framed folk-art print, from RedDoorEpiscopal, CA$80.48 (checked 23 Oct). A framed folk-art inspired print of a red church door, which opens by asking why so many Episcopal churches have red doors. The shop is listed in Kansas, and it's new, with one sale shown. Best for: an Episcopal priest or parish office. Not for: anyone outside the Episcopal tradition, who may not know the symbol.

If you must buy a mug

Then buy one with a point. Our Pastor Appreciation Mug, $25 (our price on 23 Oct), carries the pastor's name, the church's name and Paul's words of thanks, so it's a thank-you from a congregation and not a slogan. A church can also order many of these at once through our church page, from 10 to 200 pieces.

For a youth pastor

Youth pastors carry their Bibles through gyms and parking lots. The To The Moon Canvas Bible Cover, from Swanson through Christianbook, US$20.98 (checked 23 Oct), is a blue canvas cover with a carry handle and a zipper, and the line "God's plan for me is out of this world." Best for: a young person whose Bible travels. Not for: anyone with an oversized study Bible; check the fit.

How we chose

We matched gifts to what a pastor does all week, and to the tradition that gift assumes. We say when an item is a replica, when a seller is new, and where a listing tells us too little. Our own mug is last on purpose. Some links earn us a small commission at no cost to you. How we pick, and what we earn, is on our disclosure page.

The reason for the gift

Paul asked a young church to do something simple for the people who led it.

...to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, KJV)

A gift is one way of doing that. Knowing their name, and what they did this year, is the other.

Questions people ask

  • What are cool gifts for a pastor? Something that suits what a pastor does all week: reading, praying, writing and sitting with people. A replica manuscript, a prayer journal or a quiet cross all do.
  • What are unique pastor gifts? The Good Shepherd icon, the papyrus replica and the Red Door print are the most distinctive here. Match them to the pastor's tradition.
  • What are good gifts for youth pastors? Things that survive a backpack and a van: a Bible cover, a journal, a compass. Keep it practical.
  • How much should a church spend on a pastor gift? There's no set amount. These picks run from US$17.98 to CA$104.41, and a group gift can pool the cost.
  • Do these ship to Canada? Each pick says where the seller is listed and the listing ships to Canada. Check the seller's page for duties and shipping before you order.
