Pastor Gifts for Christmas, and What to Skip

Christmas gift guide cover: Pastor Gifts for Christmas, and What to Skip.

Picture a pastor's desk on the Sunday before Christmas. Three gift bags, a plate of shortbread, a stack of cards, and one more mug waiting to be unwrapped.

Short answer: the best Christmas gift for a pastor is something small they'll use or read daily, with a note saying what their work meant to you.

The note matters more than people think. A pastor spends the year hearing about problems, and the cards that come in December are often the only place anyone says plainly what went right.

So start with the note. Then pick a gift that doesn't need dusting, doesn't need a shelf and doesn't carry a message you'd have to explain. The five below were chosen for that, and every price was checked on 23 Oct.

Five Christmas gifts for a pastor

  1. Pastor Appreciation Mug, from our shop, $25 (our price on 23 Oct). A mug for a pastor from a congregation, with the pastor's name, the church's name and Paul's words of thanks printed on it. Yes, it's a mug. It's here first because it's ours, and because a church can order many at once through our church page. Best for: a pastor from a church that wants to say thank you together. Not for: a pastor with a cupboard that's already full.

  2. Trust Desktop Cross with Bronze Title Bar, from Lighthouse Christian Products through Christianbook, US$17.98 (checked 23 Oct). A standing resin desktop cross with a marbled finish and a bronze-coloured bar reading Trust, with a verse from Proverbs engraved on it. A quiet desk piece, and a small step up from a mug. Christianbook's shipping chart lists Canada. Best for: a pastor, elder or church administrator. Not for: anyone wanting something personalized.

  3. Hidden Christmas: The Surprising Truth Behind the Birth of Christ, by Timothy Keller, from Penguin Random House through Christianbook, US$9.15 (checked 23 Oct). A paperback-sized Advent read for a pastor who wants something other than the usual. Best for: a pastor preparing for Advent. Not for: anyone buying for a child.

  4. Celtic cross embossed leather prayer journal, from MhareCA, CA$55 (checked 23 Oct). A leather journal, 7 by 5 inches, embossed with a Celtic cross and knotwork. The shop is listed in Toronto, and it ships within Canada. It's new, with 3 sales shown, so a buyer takes a small risk on an unproven seller. Best for: a pastor, seminarian or graduate who keeps a prayer journal. Not for: anyone who wants a long track record from the seller.

  5. Kenojuak Ashevak Boxed Notecards, from the National Gallery of Canada Boutique, CA$18.95 (checked 23 Oct). Twelve blank notecards with envelopes. A pastor writes more notes than anyone in the building, to the sick, the grieving and the newly married. Best for: a pastor who writes by hand. Not for: anyone wanting printed Scripture on the card.

What to skip

A few gifts tend to sit unused, and they're worth naming so you can avoid them.

Skip anything that assumes a denomination the pastor isn't part of. A Luther rose is a lovely thing in a Lutheran study, and an odd one in a Baptist office. Skip anything large, because pastors move, and a heavy plaque becomes someone's moving problem. Skip a gift card for a fixed amount from a store the pastor doesn't shop at, which turns kindness into homework.

And skip a gift that's really a message, such as a book about burnout. Even if you mean it kindly, it can read as a diagnosis.

How we chose

We look for gifts that are small, useful and easy to explain. We put our own gifts first, and the rest come from sellers chosen by hand, with the price checked on the date shown. We leave out anything whose listing doesn't tell us enough to describe it honestly. Some links earn us a small commission at no cost to you. How we pick, and what we earn, is on our disclosure page.

One verse for the card

If you'd like one line to copy into the card, Paul gives you one. He wrote it to a church he loved.

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. (Philippians 1:3, KJV)

Questions people ask

  • What is a good gift for a pastor? Something small, useful and personal, paired with a handwritten note. The note usually matters more than the object.
  • How much should we spend on a pastor's Christmas gift? There's no set amount. The gifts above run from US$9 to CA$55. A church can also give one gift from the whole congregation instead of many small ones.
  • Can a whole church give a gift together? Yes. Our church page takes orders from 10 to 200 pieces, and sends a quote and a proof within one business day. Nothing is charged until you approve.
  • When should we order so it arrives before Christmas? See the order-by dates on the churches page. They're calculated from production time and a buffer, with shipping time on top.
  • Is it appropriate to give a pastor money? Congregations differ on this. Ask a board member how your church handles it, since some have a set practice and some leave it to families.
